Surprise! Minecraft Is Finally Adding Its First New Dimension In Over 14 Years

The Minecraft Live – September 2026 show has wrapped, and Mojang closed it with a landmark announcement: The Sift, described as "the first new dimension in over 14 years," will join the Overworld, the Nether, and the End as the game's fourth dimension. It is coming to Bedrock Edition and the Java Edition next year.

From Minecraft Dungeons II to the Main Game

The Sift is not entirely new to the franchise. Mojang previously revealed it for Minecraft Dungeons II, and the studio has now confirmed it will carry over into the core sandbox game. Players who want to see it early will get their chance first through Dungeons II.

Key Dates to Mark on the Calendar

• 27th October 2026 – Minecraft launches on the Nintendo Switch 2, with a free upgrade path already confirmed for existing owners.
• 29th September 2026 – Minecraft Dungeons II arrives on both Switch 1 and Switch 2, giving players their first hands-on experience with The Sift before it reaches Bedrock and Java.
• Next year (2027) – The Sift officially joins Minecraft itself as the fourth dimension.

Also Announced: Ice Caves Game Drop

Alongside the dimension news, Mojang used the Live event to share a first look at an upcoming game drop featuring Ice Caves — a new cave biome with icicles, light-emitting ice crystals, calcite, and a frozen zombie variant.

Where Things Stand

Minecraft is entering a notably busy stretch: the Switch 2 port lands next month, Dungeons II follows shortly after, and the fourth dimension arrives in 2027. For long-time players, The Sift marks the biggest structural addition to the game's world since the Nether and End — with the earliest opportunity to explore it coming via Dungeons II on 29th September 2026.
