This is a walkthrough for Valor Mortis: The Emissary.

The Emissary side quest in Valor Mortis begins with a seal, hints at betrayal, and finishes after Chapter 9 by fighting a Risen Soldier for rewards.

Spoiler alert: The Emissary side quest explains why a seal was left in the Valley of Ashes and ends after a Chapter 9 revisit to the poison camp.

Background: A seal starts a question that cannot be answered yet

The Emissary side quest begins when William collects the Emissary's Seal from a luxurious wagon inside a poison camp in the Valley of Ashes. The wagon is reached along the left passage that follows the Other Side Lantern, and the seal is on a desk inside.

Collecting the seal gives William two unresolved questions: who owned it, and why was it abandoned. The quest does not resolve them immediately. It waits until much later in Valor Mortis, so early players should treat the seal as a thread to leave open rather than a quick objective.

Development: The first clue arrives after the Slaughtermill boss fight

A second piece of evidence appears in the Fallen Village. After leaving the boss fight against the Slaughtermill, William can find the Emissary's Letter on the floor. The letter reveals that there was a traitor among the French officers who led them to the mill.

This clue changes the quest's context. The seal no longer looks like an ordinary lost item; it suggests the emissary may have been involved in a betrayal and may have survived the ambush, though William only wonders whether that happened.

Latest progress: Chapter 9 unlocks the path back through poison

The next step requires the Shield Transmutation, unlocked in the University during Chapter 9. Until that ability is available, the quest has no further action.

After unlocking it, fast travel back to the Other Side Lantern in the Valley of Ashes. Return to the wagon where the Emissary's Seal was first collected, then move along the right side of the wagon. Use Shield Transmutation to prevent poison damage while crossing the camp. Continue straight ahead until it is safe to stop using the shield. A short walk ahead, a deceased soldier lies beside the Denunciatory Letter. The letter reports the emissary for inappropriate behaviour.

Combat and ending: Defeat the Risen Soldier to collect the final reward

Pressing ahead leads to a soldier coated in corruption. Interacting with him starts a fight against a particularly tough Risen Soldier, who can temporarily summon an ally. Defeat him before continuing.

After the fight, move past the combat area and to the right to find Blood-Soaked Velvet beside a gate marked by two tricolores. Collecting the velvet concludes The Emissary quest and rewards the Remnant's Return consumable.

Before leaving, continue past the velvet. A blue memory is available to listen to, and a chest contains the Perfect Copy Amber.

Current stage: A delayed quest that closes after Chapter 9

The Emissary is a side quest that is started early but completed late. Its timeline runs from the Emissary's Seal in the Valley of Ashes, to the Emissary's Letter after the Slaughtermill fight, to the Chapter 9 Shield Transmutation revisit, to the Risen Soldier fight and the Blood-Soaked Velvet reward. The optional Perfect Copy Amber remains available at the end.
