Origin: The Lake Guardians enter the series

Uxie is known from its original appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The other Lake Guardians are Mesprit and Azelf. They originally appeared alongside the Creation trio, which consists of Dialga, Palkia and Giratina. The Uxie illustration is credited to pokemon.com.

Development: Design, names, and Pokédex lore

The three Lake Guardians share a similar design that appears to be inspired by a fae creature, such as a sprite. Their fairy-like theme continues in non-Japanese name choices. Like the legendary birds, the Lake Guardians have different names outside Japan. Each non-Japanese name takes inspiration from a fantasy creature: Uxie is similar to pixie, Mesprit to sprite, and Azelf clearly takes some inspiration from elf.

The names also include references to three different types of personal pronouns. Uxie’s name, in particular, appears to be partly based on the word “you”; it takes that word’s last letter to be its first and then ends with the reference to pixies.

Uxie is the Knowledge Pokémon. Its official Pokédex entry says it is “Known as ‘The Being of Knowledge’” and that “It is said that it can wipe out the memory of those who see its eyes.” This gives it a Men In Black-style reputation. Its sleepy-looking face is tied to that memory theme, with the Pokédex lore suggesting gorgon-style eye magic. Uxie also has no known evolutions.

Dynamax Uxie appears in Pokémon Go as a battle challenge. The message to players is simple: good luck defeating Dynamax Uxie in Pokémon Go.

Uxie’s profile still runs from its original Lake Guardians appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl through its fae-inspired design, pronoun and fantasy-creature naming, memory-related Pokédex entry, lack of known evolutions, and later Dynamax encounter in Pokémon Go.
