A slick new hack 'n' slash called Break The Night has popped up with a playable demo, and it's one to keep an eye on if you enjoy fast movement, combo-heavy combat, and magical girls with a distinctly late-2000s flair. The game is still early in development, but what's already on show feels charming and full of promise.

Where to Try It

The demo debuted as part of this year's SAGExpo, the Sonic the Hedgehog fan game event that has since grown well beyond its namesake — plenty of entries these days have nothing to do with Sonic at all. Break The Night's demo is worth noting because it isn't hosted on the game's Steam page; it's framed primarily as a combat showcase rather than a traditional slice of the full game. You can still wishlist the title on Steam in the meantime.

The Setup

In Break The Night, you follow three roommates who board a mysterious train and end up trapped in a place called the Limit, a strange space that sits between realities. (Whether boarding an obviously suspicious train was a smart move is up for debate.) While trying to find their way out, the trio runs into an evil, corrupting entity, along with a set of magical critters who grant them the power to transform.

That's about the extent of the story right now — again, the game is genuinely early in development — but the foundation is solid.

Combat and Movement

The demo centers on a tight, if simple, moveset. One button chains a basic combo, another launches enemies into the air or slams them back to the ground, and a spin attack deals wide-reaching damage. That spin attack arrives in the form of a card, which appears to hint at the roguelike element: limited-use cards you can stack to build flashier combos.

There's room to grow here. Expressiveness is the holy grail for combo-driven action games, and the current toolkit feels a touch limited in that respect. Even so, the core feels appropriately juicy, and that matters more at this stage — it suggests strong bones to build on.

The character designs lean deliciously into late-2000s aesthetics, feeling like a natural evolution of the Y2K revival that's swept through games in recent years. Movement might be the standout, though: a dash chained into a well-timed jump sends you flying across the arena, evoking the trickier advanced techniques in Celeste.

What's Next

Break The Night has a long road ahead, but the demo already makes a case for it. You can play the combat demo now and add the game to your Steam wishlist to follow its progress toward release.
