Gen.G bounce back from an opening loss with a 2-1 win over LYON to reach the 2026 World Championship quarter-finals.

Background: the Swiss Stage and the two sides before Sunday

At Worlds 2026, the Swiss Stage format spans five rounds. A team advances to the Knockout Stage after three match wins, while a team is eliminated after three match defeats. Gen.G entered the stage as the LCK champions and had already built their run with 1-0 wins over Invictus Gaming and Hanwha Life Esports. LYON had similarly opened with 1-0 wins over Team Secret Whales and Karmine Corp.

The Elo power rankings showed a large expected gap. Gen.G sat fourth with a rating of 1868 and a 118-30 record, while LYON were 28th with a rating of 1720 and a 34-28 record.

Day 3: 25 October 2026, from 20:55 onward

Earlier in the evening on the third day of the Swiss Stage, Sunday 25 October 2026, Dplus KIA defeated Movistar KOI with a 2-0 sweep. Smash produced the tournament’s first pentakill in game one of that series.

The best-of-three series between Gen.G and LYON began at 20:55.

Match timeline: LYON take game one, then Gen.G answer

Game one was controlled by LYON. Baron came up at 20 minutes, and LYON secured it without losing a player. After a five-versus-five fight, they added a second Baron and closed out the match at the Nexus. Dot Esports highlighted jungler Inspired and bottom laner Berserker, playing Kalista, as LYON’s key performers. On the other side, Canyon’s Qiyana repeatedly missed his ultimates.

Gen.G answered quickly in game two. They won a top-lane teamfight at 23 minutes, then claimed Baron and the Dragon Soul to tie the series.

In the decider, an early teamfight cost Gen.G their Galio. Kiin then arrived on Camille via Teleport. Gen.G later destroyed the mid inhibitor, collected three dragons, and won the final fight.

Consequences: Gen.G advance, LYON move to Round 4

After falling behind by a game, Gen.G completed a 3-0 Swiss Stage run and sent the LCK champions through to the quarter-finals.

For LYON, the 2-1 series loss was their first defeat at the event. They carry a 2-1 record into Round 4, where one more match win would send them to the Knockout Stage.

Round 3 results and the G2 thread

In Allen, the LEC’s representative, G2 Esports, lost 1-0 to Top Esports in Round 3 and now face elimination. LYON’s season already includes a major result against G2 Esports: LYON knocked G2 out of MSI 2026 with a 3-0 win on 10 July 2026, and Inspired was named most valuable player of the series.

Elsewhere in Round 3, Invictus Gaming beat Hanwha Life Esports 1-0. Both sides had lost to Gen.G earlier in the stage.

Next dates and current status

At the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas, Swiss Round 4 is scheduled for 28 to 30 October, with Round 5 to follow on 31 October. The quarter-finals are scheduled for 3 to 6 November at the same venue.

Gen.G are now quarter-finalists. LYON remain alive with a 2-1 record and must win in Round 4 to join them.
