This is a complete walkthrough of Valor Mortis The Scarecrow.

A Valor Mortis guide to The Scarecrow quest: find the pendant and letter, return items, then follow crows for memory and Amber.

Background: a quiet optional quest inside the Fallen Village

In Valor Mortis, The Scarecrow is a side quest set in the Fallen Village. It begins with a simple but grim image: a scarecrow suffering in the village, which is actually just a man pinned up to a cross by soldiers. The quest gives William a small but meaningful task: return scattered belongings to the man so he can finally achieve some solace.

The quest can be started and completed during the beginning of your time in the Fallen Village, making it an early objective rather than something that requires late-game progression. The original guide’s images are credited to One More Level/Eurogamer.

Development: starting The Scarecrow and collecting two missing items

The quest’s first step is location-based. Once you reach the Fields Lantern, face the Lantern and take the path to your left. That route leads to the scarecrow.

After encountering the scarecrow, the quest description gives the objective. William notes two missing items:

  1. A medallion missing from around the scarecrow’s neck.
  2. One of his pockets, which has been ripped out.

The goal is to find both and bring them back.

Step one: retrieve the Lover’s Pendant

The first item is found close to the starting point. Approach the tree directly behind the scarecrow. There, you will see a deceased soldier, a wooden cross, and most importantly the Lover’s Pendant lying on the ground.

That is one of the scarecrow’s two belongings retrieved. The remaining task is to find the missing pocket.

Step two: reach the house with the wooden wheel

Finding the pocket depends partly on how much of the Fallen Village you have already opened up. The walkthrough assumes some shortcuts have been unlocked. If you have not unlocked them yet, explore the area until the gate in front of the Fields Lantern has been opened from the opposite side.

Once that shortcut is available, go through the gate directly across from the Fields Lantern. As you pass through the gate, look to the immediate left. There is a house with a wooden wheel attached to its front. In most early passes, the front door of that house will be locked, unless you opened it during earlier exploration.

From there, continue straight ahead through the village, facing away from the Fields Lantern. When the route reaches the wheat fields, turn left into them. You know you are on the right path if you encounter a Grenadier enemy and multiple Shambling Civilians.

Keep moving through the wheat field and continue left. Eventually, you arrive at the back door of the house with the wooden wheel. Unlike the front door, this back door is open.

Step three: take the Letter with a Drawing upstairs

Inside the house, go upstairs. On the desk, collect the Letter with a Drawing.

At this point, The Scarecrow quest updates because both missing items have been retrieved. The Lover’s Pendant provides the medallion, and the Letter with a Drawing represents the missing pocket. The next objective is to return the belongings to the scarecrow.

Latest progress: returning the items and following the crows

After collecting the Letter with a Drawing, you can unbolt the front door of the house to exit. Return to the scarecrow and interact with him again to give back his belongings.

William comments that the scarecrow now seems at peace. The crows that had been circling him also fly away. This creates the quest’s final step: you must follow the crows.

If you watch the crows from a distance as they move, you will see them begin to circle a wooden shack located in the wheat field you passed through earlier.

Spoiler warning: this section reveals the final location and reward of The Scarecrow side quest.

Current stage: quest complete after one memory and one Amber reward

To finish the quest, go to the house the crows are circling and make your way to the second floor. Up there, listen to the blue memory and interact with the hay bales.

Doing so completes The Scarecrow side quest and rewards you with the Bountiful Harvest Amber. The quest is now finished, and the scarecrow’s suffering is resolved within the narrative moment.

With The Scarecrow complete, William can continue exploring the Fallen Village. Other content remains there, including the Lullaby side quest, while broader guides for Valor Mortis include lists of all Amber locations and all bosses.
