Exploring Pokémon Go's National Trust collaboration and shared memories

As a day-one Pokémon Go player who officially runs a local community around the game, I don't need much of an excuse to hit the road. When the National Trust collaboration was announced, my friends and I knew it was time for another adventure — especially after our earlier trip to Manchester for the touring bus.
How the Collaboration Works
For those who haven't followed it, the National Trust partnership spreads special encounters across various historic sites around England. Each region features its own Pokémon, and players can raid and catch two of the featured creatures per site each day. The real prize is the location-specific backgrounds these Pokémon come with. On top of that, visiting a site unlocks a quest rewarding a Treecko sporting the background tied to that exact spot. Shiny odds are slim, but the journey itself is half the fun.
Our Route From Essex to Wales
Six of us piled into cars and plotted a route to collect every featured Pokémon, running from Essex all the way to Wales and back. Day one took us to Wimpole Estate for Sewaddle, then on to Stowe Gardens in Buckingham for Hoppip. After dinner and a night's rest, we pushed on to Chirk Castle in Wales before finishing up at Lyme Park in Stockport.
Every National Trust site brought its own atmosphere. Some were sprawling gardens perfect for a long wander, while others boasted magnificent castles you could explore up close. The range of history on offer was genuinely impressive, and there was far more to see and do at each stop than we expected.
The Highs and the Frustrations
Not everything went smoothly. Gym placement at several sites left a lot to be desired — at Lyme Park in particular, one gym sat in a mostly closed-off field with no Wi-Fi anywhere nearby. All six of us burned more than 30 minutes just trying to enter and complete a single raid. It also stings a little that you only get two shots at a background Shiny per day, especially once you factor in the entry fees for these locations.
Why We'd Do It All Again
Despite the hiccups, the trip was a resounding success. We discovered gorgeous places we'd otherwise never have had a reason to visit, and the Pokémon we caught — each with its special background — now serve as souvenirs of a big group adventure. The driving, the shared meals, the long walks hunting down spawns: it all blended into something special.
That's the enduring magic of Pokémon Go. It pulls people together through the game, then drops them into remarkable real-world locations where genuine memories get made. I'll always connect the Pokémon in my collection to that trip. If you're on the fence, I'd wholeheartedly recommend planning your own road trip — catching Pokémon and exploring the real world is an experience worth having.
