CD Projekt Red details a new Cyberpunk 2077 update that adds dual-wielding, cross-platform modifications, Edgerunners story quests, and more.
Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.5 adds dual-wielding, cross-platform mods, new outfits, tarot cards, tours, and an Edgerunners 2 prequel quest.
CD Projekt Red has detailed the substantial update coming to Cyberpunk 2077, revealing a new dual-wielding skill for pistols and revolvers, cyberware customisation, cross-platform mod support, and a brand-new Edgerunners-related story quest featuring voice actors from the Netflix anime show.
Background: The Update Follows Earlier Cross-Platform Modding Precedents
Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.5 arrives after a period of incremental technical and content changes introduced since Patch 2.1. The patch notes also close out fixes for features and content introduced since Patch 2.1, so the update reads as a consolidation of ongoing support as much as a new release.
The cross-platform mod support headline has a clear precedent: CD Projekt Red added cross-platform mod support to the Remastered update for The Witcher 3. The Cyberpunk 2077 feature works in a very similar way and is again built through a partnership with mod.io.
Development: What CD Projekt Red Announced and When
CD Projekt Red media manager Laura Beitzel said during a RedStream this afternoon that the update arrives 22nd October on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, with the Switch 2 version following "in a couple of days".
The reveal was accompanied by the Cyberpunk 2077 - Official Edgerunners 2 Update Overview Trailer. The biggest creative addition is the Edgerunners-related story quest, although CD Projekt Red intentionally kept details thin.
Spoiler alert: associate game director Pawel Sasko said the quest had been written with people involved in the Netflix show, and CD Projekt Red publishing producer Natlia Pych said it would be a prequel to Edgerunners 2. Pych described it as "the last job of the King's team" and said it will let players meet characters on the team: Emily, Meshuga, and Miguel.
The patch notes name the side quest Clampdown, set before the events of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. To unlock it, complete The Heist and two gigs for Wakako, then wait for a message from her.
The update also adds a new 5-piece gear set based on the character King, which can be obtained during Clampdown. A new radio station, HKGN 102.0 FM, brings Edgerunners music into Night City. Sasko said it has 16 tracks comprised of songs from both Edgerunners 1 and 2, while the patch notes describe it as a selection of tracks from the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series.
Latest Progress: Quests, Customisation, Mods and Technical Changes
Night City Tours and Tarot Mysteries
The update introduces Night City Tours, a less action-focused pursuit described during the reveal with the word "cosy". The new side quest Paradise takes players on a guided tour narrated by Night City founder Richard Night, who tells players the lore of the city while things happen around him that do not quite seem to add up. The tour becomes a mystery to solve.
Paradise unlocks after completing The Heist and reaching level 15 Street Cred.
Alongside the tour, 12 new Minor Arcana Tarot Cards have been added across Night City. The Tarot menu now has separate sections for Major and Minor Arcana. The new tarot cards are part of a new side quest, an extension of Fool on the Hill, which activates after scanning any of the new cards. Collecting them all gives a special reward. In conjunction with the in-game cards, an actual physical deck is going on sale.
Show Off: Clothing, Hairstyles, Cyberware and Dual-Wielding
A brand-new clothing collection has arrived in Night City. Five new outfit sets can now be purchased from certain clothing vendors: Maxiwear in Heywood, Arroyo and Little China; Jinguji in City Center; NetWatch in Kabuki and Japantown; IconAmerica in Pacifica, Badlands and Northside; and one further set that will hit Night City shelves just a little later. The NUS Infiltrator clothing set can be purchased from clothing vendors in Kabuki and Japantown.
Four new TWINTONE skins for Quadra Turbo-R V-Tech are now available via Twitch Drops. Some hairstyles previously exclusive to non-player characters are now available for V, although some are only available to feminine or masculine body types.
Implantable cyberware is becoming customisable through new glam docs added to the game alongside, sometimes literally, the ripper docs players already find there. Players can now customise hand cyberware after equipping Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms, Monowire or Projectile Launch System. Five Glamdocs, marked with a spray paint icon on the map, give implants a fresh, new look. Each Glamdoc is located in a unique shop, along with its own intro scene with voiceover and animations, and offers a unique catalog of cyberware skins with customizable colors.
The new Double Trouble perk in the Cool tree, along with four auxiliary perks, introduces an entirely new playstyle, allowing players to dual-wield Pistols and Revolvers from the Power category. Photo Mode also gains frames from the Cyberpunk Trading Card Game and new poses designed to show off dual-wielding prowess.
Mod the World: Cross-Platform Mod Support
Cross-platform mod support in Cyberpunk 2077 comes after similar support was added to The Witcher 3 Remastered update. It is powered by mod.io and represents a first step into cross-platform modding, allowing players to browse and install a selection of player-created mods directly from the in-game menu.
The feature is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. Sasko noted that players could browse mods "including the adult mods" with a smile, and CD Projekt Red described the rollout as a work in progress: more mods will become available over time.
Upgrading the World and Quality of Life
Quality-of-life changes group saves in the Load Game menu by separate playthroughs, add item filters to apartment and vehicle stashes, and mark modded saves in the Load Game menu with a dedicated icon. On console, achievements and trophies cannot be earned while playing from a modded save file.
The update also adds a Field of View slider on consoles and updates the CD PROJEKT RED Account connection, My Rewards and telemetry consent menus.
The AMD FSR options have been updated: FSR 3 upscaling is no longer included, while FSR 2.1, FSR 4, and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation remain available. A toggle in settings for FSR Anti-Lag 2 has been added.
Technology: DLSS 4.5, Mac Optimisations and High Dynamic Range
The patch adds support for DLSS 4.5, including up to 6X Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and the 2nd Generation Transformer Model.
It also adds support for glasses-free 3D effects on compatible Samsung Odyssey 3D monitors, along with a Motion Comfort setting that lets players balance 3D depth and viewing comfort. On Mac, the update adds MetalFX Frame Interpolation and Denoising.
CD Projekt Red introduced various performance optimizations, including improvements specifically for Ray Tracing and for PlayStation 5 Pro. High Dynamic Range rendering has been improved to provide more accurate colors, brightness, and contrast on compatible displays.
Fixes: Stability, Save Problems and Camera Controls
The fixes include:
- An issue on Nintendo Switch 2 where saving the game could result in a "Save failed - insufficient space" error.
- An issue where adjusting High Dynamic Range settings on PlayStation 5 had no effect.
- An issue under "Things Done Changed" where the Delamain cab could get stuck after crashing into another vehicle, blocking quest progression.
- An issue where enabling Film Grain had no effect.
- An issue where tagging enemies while scanning could also cause V to crouch or stand up when using certain control schemes.
- Missing controller settings for the Third-Person Camera.
- Several typos in various languages.
- Various other fixes for features and content introduced since Patch 2.1.
Current Stage: A Broad Rollout With More Mods to Come
The update is staged: it begins 22nd October on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, with Switch 2 following in a couple of days. Content such as Clampdown, Paradise, the 12 new Minor Arcana Tarot Cards, the five new outfit sets, the 5-piece King gear set, HKGN 102.0 FM, and the Double Trouble perk defines the major additions. Cross-platform mod support is described as a first step, with more mods to be added over time. The current phase is therefore a wide release of story, customisation, modding and technical improvements, followed by ongoing expansion of the mod library and continued stabilization since Patch 2.1.
