Why This Mission Gates Two Others

In Control Resonant, 'The Subway Fault' is not an optional detour. Two later missions — 'Recursions and Iterations' and 'The Underpass Fault' — are softblocked if you haven't cleared it, because both require the navigational ability called Reach, which this mission grants. If you try to push into 'The Underpass Fault' without finishing this one first, the game will automatically send you here to unlock it. In other words, you'll be doing it eventually either way, so it's worth understanding the route before diving in.

The mission has four main beats:

  • Investigate the subway in the Evacuation Zone.
  • Find and talk to Jesse.
  • Help Jessie complete the ritual.
  • Leave the subway.

Getting to Railyard Street Station

The Fault sits inside the Railyard Street Station, in the northern part of the Evacuation Zone. If you haven't explored much of this area yet, fast travel to the 'Main Street' point and head north — over the rooftops or through the streets — until you reach a construction site.

That site is infested with Mold. Kill one of these foes to destroy the green mold wall blocking your path; if you can't spot it, it's on the right-hand side of the site's main area and looks a bit like snot. Once it's down, go through the gap, turn right on the road, and the subway station will be directly ahead — Jesse's large projections make the destination hard to miss.

Grab the resource chest near the entrance before heading down to the platform, then enter the tunnel not blocked by a train. A second resource chest sits to your left shortly after you enter.

Navigating the Tunnels and Trains

The bulk of the trip to the Fault is a chain of tunnels, with trains coming at you from unexpected directions. The key beats:

  1. Continue down the first tunnel until you reach a hole requiring you to come forward and Shift to the next level, landing at the start of another tunnel. Stay off the tracks — another train is coming.
  2. Shift to the entrance on your right-hand side, which drops you into yet another tunnel.
  3. Clear the Mold monsters, climb atop the train, and jump across the room. Quickly open a resource chest to the right, then take the left-hand entrance and Shift onto the wall.
  4. The next tunnel has a train speeding down it. Head in the opposite direction: wait for it to pass, then dash in. Walkways offer safety but are blocked in places, forcing you onto the tracks — wait for the train, dash forward, and repeat. At the point where the walkways end, wait for the train to pass, dash forward, and climb onto the platform to your right.
  5. Follow the tunnel to your left, go through the doors on the right, and head down the stairs into — another tunnel. Mold monsters wait at the bottom. Clear them and continue to a wide area with multiple trains crossing it.

In that wide area, your goal is a Mold-filled lower level on the opposite side. Two approaches: jump between the stationary trains in the middle while dodging moving ones, or float over to the opposite platforms and drop down one at a time. The second takes longer but removes the train risk entirely. After destroying the Mold on that platform, drop to the lower section, run through the final tunnel, and interact with the TV at the end — that's the Fault.

Meeting Jesse and Unlocking Reach

As with previous Faults, your first task is finding and talking to Jesse. She isn't doing well, but the payoff is significant: you unlock Reach, a new navigational ability.

Have you noticed the odd little circles on the edges of some buildings? Those tie into Reach. When you're close to one, Reach lets you zoom over to its location — and you always land safely. Beyond shortcuts and new areas, Reach may help you uncover secrets, and it's mandatory for 'Recursions and Iterations', which stays softblocked without it.

The remainder of the Fault is effectively a Reach tutorial. Play through it, learn how the ability works, and complete the ritual. Your rewards: one Living Shard, one Talent Point, and 600 XP for the Evacuation Zone.

Escaping the Subway

Yes, more tunnels. Use Reach to leave the Fault area and return to the room with the trains moving back and forth. From there, use Reach to get back to the tunnel you originally entered through — it works on both the side platforms and the stationary trains in the middle. Time your Reaches so moving trains don't clip you: you won't take damage, but you will have to redo the reach.

Back in the tunnel, deal with the returned Hiss enemies — the path ahead is blocked until they're dead, and this stretch is a good place to practise zipping around with Reach in combat.

Then retrace your steps: up the stairs, back down the tunnels, trains still active (use Reach on the tracks to move faster). At the respawn point, break from the original path — don't go through the doors. Instead, continue up the tunnel past it and take the doorway on your right.

Shift again to enter a large room filled with Mold and stationary trains. Head to the back, where a small tunnel section is blocked by a train; there, you'll find a doorway where Shift triggers automatically. On the other side, a fast travel point sits to your right, and a set of doors opens a shortcut back to an earlier part of the tunnels — though using the fast travel point directly is the simpler exit.

Where to Go Next

Fast travel back to 'The Spire' to close the next Fault. You can tackle 'The Underpass Fault' or push on with 'Recursions and Iterations', but clearing the Underpass Fault first saves you backtracking later. If you'd rather take a break from Faults entirely, hunting down all the taxi and dog locations makes for a solid change of pace.

Current stage: 'The Subway Fault' is done, Reach is in your toolkit, and both previously softblocked missions — 'Recursions and Iterations' and 'The Underpass Fault' — are now open to you.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Is "The Subway Fault" optional in Control Resonant?

No. It is mandatory content — two later missions, "Recursions and Iterations" and "The Underpass Fault," are softblocked until you clear it, because both require the Reach navigational ability that this mission grants. If you try to enter "The Underpass Fault" without finishing it first, the game will automatically send you here.

What do I get for completing "The Subway Fault"?

You unlock Reach, a new navigational ability that lets you zoom to marked circles on buildings, unlocking shortcuts and new areas. Additionally, you receive one Living Shard, one Talent Point, and 600 XP for the Evacuation Zone.

Where is the Subway Fault located?

It sits inside Railyard Street Station, in the northern part of the Evacuation Zone. The easiest route is to fast travel to the "Main Street" point and head north over the rooftops or through the streets until you reach a construction site; kill a Mold foe there to destroy the green mold wall blocking the path, then follow the road to the station.

What are the main steps of the mission?

The mission has four main beats: investigate the subway in the Evacuation Zone, find and talk to Jesse, help Jesse complete the ritual, and then leave the subway.
